Kataeb Party leader Samy Gemayel called for a renewed national commitment to restore the State, assert Lebanon’s sovereignty, enforce arms control, and secure the southern border, emphasizing the urgent need for peace and stability.
Speaking at the 50th anniversary of the House of the Future, Gemayel recalled his father, former President Amine Gemayel’s bold decision 43 years ago, during the Israeli occupation, to launch negotiations aimed at reclaiming Lebanese territory.
“What’s commonly called the May 17 Agreement was really the deal that could have secured the withdrawal of the Israeli army from Lebanon,” he said, noting that the agreement has too often been used for internal political maneuvering.
“Unfortunately, it’s taken 43 years to get back to the same steps, negotiations, and talking points,” Gemayel said. “We hope that today we have the courage to follow through completely. Since 1969, Lebanon has lived through crises, and our children have grown up knowing war and instability. It’s time they no longer have to witness bloodshed or think about leaving the country. Our goal has to be building peace.”
“The truth is that the agreement at that time was far better than the current ceasefire and maritime border agreements,” he added.
Gemayel recalled his father’s words at the start of his presidency: “Give us peace, and take what amazes the world.”
“Today, in 2025, from the House of the Future, we reaffirm that once peace prevails in Lebanon, we have everything we need to become a leading economic state. No other small country has the natural resources, climate, and human talent that Lebanon has,” he said.
Reflecting on the founding of the House of the Future, Gemayel said, “Fifty years ago, amid bombings, battles, and major challenges, a group of people led by my father were thinking, analyzing, documenting, and working to propose constructive solutions. Today, we pledge to continue that work, staying active and contributing at every stage of Lebanon’s history to lay the foundation for the future.”
He underscored the importance of strategic, long-term planning.
“We need people who can think ahead and plan strategically for years, not just months. That’s the role of the new generation, and the House of the Future,” he said.
Gemayel concluded by paying tribute to his father, describing him as “a thoughtful, courageous, and steadfast man who has always put Lebanon first. He has dedicated his life, even sacrificing his health, his son, and his family, in service to the country.”
