Gemayel Discusses Reform Path, Arms Control with U.S. Treasury Delegation

Kataeb Party leader Samy Gemayel met with a delegation from the U.S. Department of the Treasury led by Sebastian Gorka, Deputy Assistant to the U.S. President for Counterterrorism Affairs, to discuss Lebanon’s reform process and efforts to curb financial crimes and terrorism financing.

Talks focused on the country’s ongoing reform trajectory, particularly in the financial sector, and emphasized the need to combat money laundering, smuggling, and the use of illicit funds in terrorist activities.

Both sides underlined the importance of implementing credible reforms to rebuild confidence in the Lebanese State and its institutions. They also reviewed potential opportunities that could open up for Lebanon if it follows through with the required reforms and the international assistance that could accompany such progress.

However, participants cautioned that failure to comply with international laws and agreements could have serious repercussions, warning that it may jeopardize Lebanon’s economic and political recovery and deepen the challenges facing the country and its people.

The meeting was attended by the head of the Kataeb Party’s Foreign Affairs Department, Marwan Abdallah, along with members of the U.S. delegation, including Nancy Dahdouh, Director for Counterterrorism and Threats at the National Security Council; Max Van Amerongen, Director for Threat Finance and Sanctions at the National Security Council; and Rudy Atallah, Special Assistant to the President and Deputy Director for Counterterrorism at the National Security Council.
