Gemayel Discusses Lebanon’s Recovery and Sovereignty with Hungarian PM, Seeks European Support

Lebanese Kataeb Party leader Samy Gemayel met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to discuss the latest developments in Lebanon. The meeting, attended by MP Nadim Gemayel and Marwan Abdallah, the head of the Kataeb Party’s Foreign Affairs Department, took place on the sidelines of the conference titled The Future of Lebanon from a Christian Perspective, held in Budapest.

The discussions centered on pressing issues concerning Lebanon’s recovery and political stability. The interlocutors emphasized the urgent need to enforce the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon and to restore the sovereignty of the Lebanese State over its entire territory. They also highlighted the importance of advancing Lebanon’s recovery process and implementing reforms across key sectors, following the election of a new president and the formation of a government.

A significant topic of discussion was the ongoing presence of Syrians in Lebanon. The meeting underscored the need to resolve this issue, particularly in the wake of the fall of the Assad regime in Syria and the establishment of a new authority, backed by the international community, that is capable of ensuring the safe and organized return of displaced persons to their homeland. The European role in facilitating this process was stressed, with the Kataeb delegation urging greater European contributions to ease the burden on Lebanon.

Furthermore, the discussions explored the bilateral ties between Lebanon and Hungary, with a focus on the importance of European support for Lebanon’s recovery efforts. The Kataeb delegation expressed gratitude to the Hungarian government for the invitation to the conference and commended the initiative for bringing together key stakeholders focused on Lebanon’s future.

The delegation also met with Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó to further discuss current affairs, ways to strengthen bilateral relations, and explore Hungary’s support for Lebanon. During this meeting, the Kataeb delegation reiterated Lebanon’s desire for international backing to support its sovereign choices within the European community.
