Gemayel Calls for Election of a President Capable of Saving the Lebanese from Poverty, Misery

Kataeb Leader Samy Gemayel on Monday said that his party’s aim was to save Lebanon from its sufferings and the Lebanese from being swept away by floods as witnessed yesterday in a bid not to be dragged into more poverty and misery for six additional years.

“We seek a president who does not know what does sleep mean, plays a major role alongside with the Prime Minister and the government in a bid to carry out the necessary reforms to ensure the future of our youth, protect the Lebanese from the major economic crisis the country is experiencing,” Gemayel said following his meeting with National Moderation Bloc.

Gemayel began his speech by welcoming the National Moderation Bloc and said: "We are pleased with this atmosphere of understanding and love that would continue as we both share the same vision. We put ourselves at the service of Lebanon and the Lebanese to save the country from the crisis it is experiencing”

He stressed that the Kataeb Party and the National Moderation Bloc aimed at electing a president who does not adopt the same approach similar to the one adopted in the last six years, saying that the upcoming president shall address all country’s main issues as Lebanon has a sovereign issue and an economic one.

“We seek a new Lebanon for the next six years as we will neither tolerate problems nor conflicts. We also seek a president who is ready to confront,” he pointed out.

The Kataeb leader stated that his party would work with all deputies and blocs in a bid to elect a president who is capable of puting Lebanon on the right track.

In response to a question, Gemayel said that the upcoming president election session might take place next Friday as the maritime border demarcation agreement will be signed on Thursday according to what Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said.

“We consider the constitutional deadline to elect a president as very important. As for the two-thirds quorum in the second round, it is a jurisprudence. We can elect a president instead of delaying because the constitution does not stipulate two-thirds of the quorum in the second round”

Gemayel stressed that the Kataeb Party would exert its utmost efforts to achieve its aim.

“No one can save Lebanon alone by himself. We extend our hands and deal positively. We wish that everyone stays away from selfishness so that we could save the country together,” he concluded.

The meeting was attended by Kataeb Deputy Head Dr. Selim Sayegh and Kataeb Lawmaker Elias Hankach.

From the National Moderation Bloc side, Lawmakers: Walid Baarini, Ahmad Kheir, Sajih Attieh and Mohammad Sleiman.
