France Amid Student Protests... Over 1,700 Arrested in One Day

French authorities arrested more than 1,700 people yesterday during student protests that included acts of violence and the closure of high schools, while organizers called for continued mobilization, demanding concrete measures to improve study conditions.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez stated that “1,747 people were arrested on Friday, bringing the total to over 5,000 since Monday, due to the closure of high schools.”

He noted that “735 institutions were affected by the mobilization, and we witnessed acts of violence near 158 institutions, where projectiles were thrown and law enforcement, teachers, journalists, and passersby were attacked.”
