Families of Beirut Blast Victims Rally Outside Justice Palace

Families of the Beirut port blast victims have rallied outside the Justice Palace in Beirut, calling to protect the investigations into the case and to face what they term as "the coup against the law."

It is to note that a number of MPs are currently meeting with the Caretaker Minister of Justice, Henry Khoury, for talks over the latest judicial developments.

In a statement, the collective of the blast victims' families denounced "the political, security and judicial coup" represented by the decision to prosecute Judge Bitar.

They also called on authorities to assume "full responsibility for the safety of the judge," in a country with a history of political assassinations.

The Public Prosecutor of Lebanon's Court of Cassation Ghassan Oueidat ordered Wednesday the release of all 17 suspects detained in connection with the deadly 2020 Beirut port blast.

Judge Oueidat has also issued charges against Tarek Bitar, the judge leading the port blast investigation, for "rebelling against the judiciary."

He also slapped a travel ban on Bitar.

Bitar said he will not step down from the probe.
