In a decisive security operation, the Syrian Ministry of Interior announced the dismantling of a Hezbollah-affiliated armed cell in western Damascus. The group was reportedly equipped with rocket launchers, 19 Grad rockets, and ammunition, and had trained in Lebanon with plans to carry out operations inside Syria.
This development is expected to heighten concerns in Lebanon, with military analysts suggesting that it carries implications far beyond a simple internal Syrian security matter.
Speaking to Kataeb.org, a senior military expert described the operation as a serious escalation that reflects Hezbollah’s strategy to entangle Lebanon in regional crises. According to the expert, the party’s objective is to distract the Lebanese public from core national issues, particularly the disarmament of Hezbollah itself.
The expert noted that Hezbollah shows no hesitation in pursuing its goals at any cost, even if it risks undermining Lebanese-Syrian ties or dragging Lebanon into conflicts with Syria’s new leadership under President Ahmad Al-Sharaa.
“This cell is only a part of a broader Hezbollah plan,” the expert explained. “Under the pretext of protecting Lebanon from Israeli threats, the party is actually using its armed presence to maintain influence and further complicate Lebanon’s internal affairs.”
He emphasized that recruiting and training such cells on Lebanese soil, then sending them to execute operations in Syria, constitutes a direct challenge to the Lebanese government, which recently made a clear sovereign decision to extend State authority and reject the presence of any armed militias outside its control.
“The party not only refuses to comply with the Lebanese government’s decision, but actively seeks to stir crises that destabilize Lebanon and weaken the State. This represents a direct threat to national security, particularly given developments in Syria that could invite greater regional interventions," the expert warned.
“The Lebanese government must address this development decisively, taking concrete and effective measures to prevent these attempts from drawing Lebanon into external conflicts. These actions serve only to harm the Lebanese people and undermine regional stability.”
