EU Welcomes Ceasefire Agreement, Urges Swift Political Action in Lebanon

High Representative of the European Union Josep Borrell issued a statement on behalf of the EU welcoming the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon and praising the mediation efforts led by France and the United States.

"This is a significant achievement, one that the EU and its Member States have consistently called for throughout this year," Borrell remarked.

The EU stressed the importance of ensuring the ceasefire remains intact to safeguard the people in both countries and facilitate the return of displaced individuals on both sides of the border to their homes.

"This requires, above all, the commitment of both sides: the sovereignty of Lebanon and Israel must be fully respected, and all cross-border attacks must cease," Borrell added.

He also called on regional and international actors to actively support the ceasefire, turning it into a lasting step toward regional peace and stability.

Borrell reiterated the EU's commitment to using its tools, including the European Peace Facility, to assist the Lebanese Armed Forces and UNIFIL in effectively implementing UNSC Resolution 1701.

The EU further pledged to continue providing humanitarian aid and post-conflict recovery support, particularly for those affected by the conflict, with a focus on internally displaced persons.

"The EU is particularly determined to continue supporting Lebanon's sovereignty and its state-building efforts," Borrell emphasized.

Addressing Lebanon's internal challenges, he urged the country's political leaders to seize the opportunity to resolve their long-standing political and economic deadlock.

"They must now act swiftly to elect a President after two years of vacancy and begin rebuilding a strong and sovereign Lebanese State," Borrell concluded.
