Dagher: Appropriate Venue for Discussing Extension of Army Commander's Term Is Within Cabinet

Kataeb Secretary-General Serge Dagher affirmed that the opposition, including the Kataeb, the Lebanese Forces, the reformists, the independents, and others, are unified in their objectives.

"We are committed to ensuring the army commander position is not left vacant, especially during this time of war and the appropriate venue for discussing the extension is within the Cabinet," Dagher said in an interview with MTV.

"We all refuse to appoint an army commander amid presidential vacuum. They accuse us of having a Christian-Christian problem, while this problem is national, and everyone is responsible for it," he added.

He clarified that the two major Christian blocs have 20 deputies each and cannot individually obstruct the quorum.

He noted that the constitution states that in the absence of the president, the parliament should only hold presidential elections sessions.

He considered that Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri is trying to run the parliament as he wishes, away from the constitution.

"It is Berri's constitutional duty to open sessions to elect the president," he stressed.

"The extortion of Berri must stop; he always forces us to choose between the bad and the worse," he said.

Dagher explained the insistence on postponing the retirement in the government because Minister Bassil would challenge in both cases.

He stated that challenging a decision issued by the government is better, as any 10 deputies can file a complaint with the Council of State, which has a month to respond.

Dagher expressed his wish that Hezbollah would adopt UNSC Resolution 1701, noting that the Kataeb party has sacrificed 5513 martyrs in defense of Lebanon.

"Hezbollah has declared a war for God's sake without anyone attacking it. In every statement, it claims to be launching attacks in response to what's happening in Gaza and name the martyrs on the path to Jerusalem. But the question is, who attacked you, and who forced you into this war?" he asked.

He emphasized that the Kataeb party sympathize with Gaza, but the children of Lebanon come first before the children of the entire world.
