Constitutional Council Rules on the Mandate of Security Chiefs

The deadline for the Constitutional Council's meetings ends today to make its decision on the appeal presented by the Free Patriotic Movement against the law issued by Parliament, which extended the mandate of the heads of security agencies by one year.

The Constitutional Council has held deliberation sessions behind the scenes in recent days in the presence of all members. Legally, the Council is considered to have reached its legal quorum if eight out of ten members are present, while the issuance of the decision requires a majority of seven members.

According to well-informed sources in"Annahar" newspaper, the Council will make its decision in the afternoon at the end of the legal deadline, if the majority signs the decision. Otherwise, the latter will not be issued, and the contested law will come into effect.

It should be noted that the law included a one-year extension for the commander-in-chief of the army, General Joseph Aoun, and the director general of the ISF, General Imad Osman.

The FPM filed a review of the appeal against the law extending the mandate of the army commander, General Joseph Aoun, for a period of one year on January 3rd.
