Chris Brown Sues Warner Bros for $500 Million over ‘Defamatory’ Documentary

Chris Brown has filed a $500 million lawsuit against Warner Bros and others over what he claims is a “defamatory documentary” about allegations of sexual assault and other accusations, according to a statement from his lawyers posted to the singer’s Instagram.

The film, Chris Brown: A History of Violence, released in October by Warner Bros’ Investigation Discovery channel, chronicles allegations of domestic violence, assault, and sexual misconduct against the American R&B singer and rapper over the years.

Brown, 35, first rose to fame with his rich R&B voice and later rap skills, but his reputation was tarnished by allegations of abuse. Most notably, he was convicted of assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna before the 2009 Grammy Awards, a high-profile incident that led the pop star to miss the annual gala.

In a complaint filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Brown’s lawyers stated that the documentary streamed on Max promotes a “misleading narrative” and accuses their client of “heinous acts, including sexual assault and evidence tampering” — claims the attorneys say were discredited in court and dismissed as baseless.

The attorneys added that the documentary “sensationalized debunked claims to drive viewership and revenue, recklessly damaging Mr. Brown’s reputation and spreading false information to the public,” according to the statement posted on the singer’s Instagram on Wednesday.

“To be clear, Mr. Brown has never been found at fault for any type of sexual crime,” the lawyers emphasized.

A spokesperson for Investigation Discovery, in a statement published by USA Today on Wednesday, said,

“We stand behind the production and will vigorously defend ourselves against this lawsuit.”

The $500 million lawsuit names Warner Bros, Ample, LLC, and individuals involved in producing the documentary as defendants, according to the lawyers’ statement.

Levi McCathern, Brown’s attorney, argued that the filmmakers had undermined Brown’s “decade-long efforts to rebuild his life but also the credibility of true survivors of violence.”

Legal Battles and Past Controversies

Brown, who began his music career as a church choir singer in Virginia, has faced numerous legal issues over the years.

In 2016, he was arrested after a woman alleged he had pointed a gun at her. Earlier that year, another woman accused him of battery in Las Vegas.

He was also accused of raping a woman in a luxury Paris hotel, a claim he denied. Brown was not charged in the case.

The lawsuit signals another chapter in the ongoing saga of Brown’s contentious relationship with the media and legal system.
