Cardi B has apologised after facing criticism for promoting a fundraiser for Armenia.

The rapper posted details of the event as the country's ongoing conflict with Azerbaijan over the separatist Nagorno-Karabakh territory continues.

It prompted the hashtag #cardibsupportsterrorism on social media, with some users criticising the star.

In a voice message posted on Twitter, Cardi B said she had publicised the event to support a friend.

"I did not know that this is a war between two countries," she said.

Following the backlash, she said she looked into the conflict and realised she had not done her research properly beforehand.

The star said she has a lot of Armenian friends but does not know anyone from Azerbaijan.

"My wish is - since I did a little bit of research today because you guys gave me so much comments - my wish is that both the countries would just be at peace," the star continued in her voice message.

"There's no little tiny land that is worth chaos, death, fighting, especially in this year that is so.... this is such a bad year. There's a lot of sickness. I feel like God is trying to give us a message…

"I'm not picking sides. I love both the countries and I'm sorry that I offended anybody. That is not my style. I don't like that type of stuff.

"And I'm sorry that I offended anybody, that we offended anybody. We just really wish peace, and that's it."

Armenia, which has a Christian-majority population, and Azerbaijan - which is mainly Muslim - first clashed in the 1980s over Nagorno-Karabakh.

The breakaway region is inside Azerbaijan but is mostly populated and run by ethnic Armenians.

Although a ceasefire was agreed in 1994, Azerbaijan and Armenia frequently accuse each other of attacks around the territory and along the separate Azeri-Armenian frontier.
