U.S. Ambassador Michel Issa paid two visits to Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri in less than 24 hours, an unusual diplomatic pattern that has stirred speculation about intensified American efforts to advance an emerging initiative in Lebanon, according to information obtained by Nidaa al-Watan.
Issa’s first visit to Ain al-Tineh on Wednesday came alongside a delegation from the American Task Force for Lebanon (ATFL). His second visit, on Thursday, was conducted alone and lasted nearly an hour. The ambassador left without making any statement.
The rapid sequence, political sources said, suggests Washington is working on a project that requires close follow-up and swift answers to questions raised in earlier rounds of talks.
Sources familiar with the meetings told Nidaa al-Watan that Thursday’s encounter between Berri and Issa “was positive.”
According to the same sources, Berri informed the ambassador that Lebanon would implement “100 percent” of its obligations under the ceasefire agreement within two weeks.
“We are waiting for the Israeli side to implement the agreement,” Berri reportedly said, affirming that the Lebanese Army has completed “90 percent” of the required measures south of the Litani River and will fully implement the remainder before the end of the year.
The ambassador was described as receptive to Berri’s remarks and pledged to relay the full picture from Beirut to officials in Washington.
