Berri Says He Accepts Hezbollah Pullback From South if Israel Withdraws From Lebanon

Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said Friday that he would support the withdrawal of Hezbollah from south of the Litani River provided Israel also pulls back from areas it occupies.

In remarks issued through his Amal Movement, Berri also sharply criticized the US-mediated ceasefire framework, saying he could back a full cessation of hostilities “without restrictions” and “unconditional on land, sea and air.”

Speaking during a meeting with Lebanese Army Commander Rodolphe Haykal, Berri said he supported a reciprocal arrangement in which Hezbollah would withdraw from south of the Litani in parallel with an Israeli pullout from occupied areas, describing parts of the proposed framework as “unfair.”

He added that the text could have been acceptable had it begun with an unconditional ceasefire across all domains.

“Instead of this hybrid agreement, we could have viewed the beginning of the text positively had it provided for an unconditional ceasefire on land, at sea and in the air, without the destruction of existing structures,” he said. “But it was booby-trapped by the addition of a complete cessation of fire by Hezbollah, as well as the withdrawal of all its members from south of the Litani.”

“In a nutshell, I approve the following: The ceasefire shall be understood as complete and comprehensive, without conditions, on land, at sea and in the air, and without bulldozing or destroying existing structures.”
