Beirut and Southern Lebanon Hit by Israeli Strikes as Tensions with Hezbollah Escalate

In the early hours of Sunday, Israeli airstrikes targeted the southern suburbs of Beirut following a pre-dawn warning issued by Avichay Adraee, the spokesperson for the Israeli army.

The warning, delivered at approximately 4:30 AM, specifically advised residents of certain buildings in the areas of Haret Hreik and Hadath to evacuate, signaling imminent military action.

Shortly after the warning, two airstrikes hit Hadath, followed by two more strikes on Haret Hreik. The intensity of the blasts reverberated through the city, leaving many residents alarmed and on edge as tensions between Israel and Hezbollah continue to escalate.

The Israeli military said it targeted a Hezbollah command centre and underground weapons facility.

"Earlier this morning (Sunday), the IAF (Israeli air force) conducted an intelligence-based strike on a command centre of Hezbollah's intelligence headquarters and an underground weapons workshop in Beirut," the military said in a statement.

In Southern Lebanon, a new wave of Israeli bombardment hit villages across the districts of Tyre and Bint Jbeil overnight, continuing into this morning, escalating tensions and leaving behind significant damage to property and infrastructure.

Israeli airstrikes targeted multiple towns, including Ma’aroub, Deir Qanoun Ras Al-Ain, and Srifa, where minor injuries were reported. Medical teams treated the wounded on-site. In the town of Siddiqin, a drone strike targeted a motorcycle, killing a member of the Islamic Health Committee. Additional airstrikes were reported in the areas of Sayyad farm, Ramadiyah, and Kafra.

In the early hours of the day, after heavy clashes, Israeli artillery shelled the towns of Ayta al-Shaab and Ramyah. The artillery barrage, particularly along the Ayta al-Shaab and Qouzah axes, resulted in extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure.

Further to the west, the outskirts of Naqoura, Jabal Al-Labouna, Alma al-Shaab, and Tayr Harfa were subjected to machine gun fire, with Israeli forces targeting the woodlands near the Blue Line, intensifying the strain on local residents.

Throughout last night and into the morning, Israeli reconnaissance aircraft, drones, and warplanes hovered persistently over the villages in Tyre and Bint Jbeil. The skies were illuminated by flares dropped over the western and central sectors, stretching from the Litani River to the Mediterranean coast, signaling the continuing intensity of the conflict.

The Israeli army on Sunday announced that separate strikes in southern Lebanon targeted and killed three prominent Hezbollah operatives.

The slain Hezbollah commanders have been identified as al-Hajj Abbas Salameh, a senior member of Hezbollah’s Southern Front, Reda Abbas Ouda, a communications specialist, and Ahmed Ali Hussain, responsible for weapons manufacturing.

On the other side, Hezbollah announced it launched a big rocket salvo at an Israeli army base east of the northern city of Safed, saying the attack was “in defense of Lebanon” and “in response to the Israeli enemy’s attacks on villages and homes.”

UN peacekeepers (UNIFIL) operating in the region have faced severe difficulties. According to a statement from UNIFIL, forces in the Mays al-Jabal area have not received supplies of food or water since September 27 due to road blockages caused by the ongoing clashes. As of yesterday, they are without water, exacerbating the humanitarian situation for peacekeepers on the ground.

The conflict has also severely impacted the livelihoods of local residents. Fishermen off the coast of Tyre and in the town of Sarafand remain unable to work due to the Israeli-imposed naval blockade, leaving them without income. Meanwhile, the Litani Water Authority has started repairing the irrigation channels that supply water to the agricultural plains of Tyre and Al-Qasimiya. Despite these efforts, citrus and banana farmers have suffered devastating losses, unable to harvest their crops due to the frequent targeting of agricultural workers in the fields and orchards.
