Banque du Liban Assets Fall 1.1% as Gold Holdings Surge Nearly 30%

Banque du Liban’s (BDL) total assets declined by 1.14% year-on-year to $93.32 billion by mid-August 2026, according to the central bank’s balance sheet, as the value of its gold holdings rose sharply while foreign reserve assets edged lower.

Gold accounted for 42.95% of the central bank’s total assets and climbed 29.42% from a year earlier to $40.1 billion by mid-August.

Foreign reserve assets, meanwhile, represented 12.45% of total assets and fell 0.64% year-on-year to $11.66 billion. Despite the annual decline, foreign reserves increased by $84.2 million during the first two weeks of August.

On the liabilities side, financial sector deposits remained by far the largest component, accounting for 86.05% of BDL’s total liabilities. They fell 4.98% year-on-year to $80.3 billion by mid-August, with more than 90% of the deposits denominated in U.S. dollars.

Public sector deposits moved in the opposite direction, rising 31.15% from a year earlier to $10.3 billion. They represented 11.02% of the central bank’s total liabilities by mid-August.

Currency in circulation outside Banque du Liban, meanwhile, accounted for 0.67% of total liabilities and declined 24.43% year-on-year to $628.3 million.
