In a poignant address, Beirut Greek Orthodox Archbishop Elias Audi urged Lebanese officials and citizens alike to confront Lebanon’s political paralysis and prioritize the election of a president, urging unity and decisive action amidst the ongoing presidential crisis gripping the nation.
"If we closely examine the situation in this country, we see that all of us, as Lebanese, are called to work towards saving our nation. But is anyone listening and responding?" Archbishop Audi said in his Sunday sermon, underscoring the fundamental truth that a nation cannot function without a head of state.
The Archbishop did not mince words in addressing the Lebanese parliament's failure to fulfill its constitutional duty, saying that lawmakers were supposed to elect a president before the end of the president’s term but they have not yet heeded the call of duty.
Drawing attention to the broader implications of Lebanon's leadership vacuum, Archbishop Audi highlighted the repercussions for national stability and governance.
"If they are incapable of performing their role or have reached an impasse with no way out, doesn’t national and ethical responsibility dictate that they should inform those who elected and entrusted them with the duty of parliamentary representation that this current parliament, in its current composition, is unable to elect a president?" he asked.
He suggested that if the current parliament is unable to meet this critical obligation, it should resign to allow others to take on the responsibility through democratic means as outlined in the Constitution.
Archbishop Audi turned to the Lebanese citizens, urging them to actively engage in holding their representatives accountable.
"Citizens are also responsible and called to hold their representatives accountable and to object to any misstep or negligence they observe in their performance," he asserted.
"Look around you. Do you see any country without a president to lead, represent, and speak on its behalf? Do you see a parliament that shirks its duty to elect a president in a timely and necessary manner?" Archbishop Audi asked.
Concluding his address, Archbishop Audi made a fervent plea for unity and urgent action.
"National interest calls upon everyone, but is anyone able to hear the call before it’s too late?" he asked, urging all sectors of society to come together and elect a president to steer the country towards stability and progress.
