Aoun Defends Bassil and Accuses Mikati: I Will Stand Against Not Adopting Unified Criteria to Form a Government

Lebanese President Michel Aoun stated that Mikati’s policy in forming the government confirms his unwillingness to do so.

"One of my mistakes is that I did not enter into deals and brokerage," said Aoun in a farewell interview with accredited journalists in Baabda.

He declared that he would stand against the failure to adopt unified criteria for forming a government. “No legal text prevents accepting the resignation,” he emphasized.

Aoun pointed out that peace with Israel was out of question and there was no secret agreements.

Regarding maritime border demarcation with Syria, he said: “The date was postponed for reasons we may not know, but I think that the Syrian side is not ready yet. Negotiations are difficult even with friend countries. If contact with President Bashar al-Assad was not positive, we would not have asked for a date to send the delegation.”

“It is not acceptable to impose guardianship on the Free Patriotic Movement. We have rejected the guardianship of countries,” Aoun continued, saying that Gebran Bassil was permanently held responsible, and this was a shame.
