Lebanese President Joseph Aoun called for a careful and responsible approach to the issue of Hezbollah disarmament, stressing that the topic is both sensitive and critical for maintaining national peace.
Speaking following a meeting with Maronite Patriarch Bechara al-Rahi ahead of the Easter Sunday Mass in Bkirki, Aoun underscored the importance of addressing the matter with caution to avoid escalating tensions, reiterating his commitment to a reconciliatory approach rather than a confrontational one.
“We must address the issue of non-state weapons with care, as it is crucial for preserving civil peace,” Aoun stated. “We will shoulder this responsibility alongside other political factions. I believe in a reconciliatory approach, not a confrontational one. Otherwise, Lebanon will be driven to ruin. The decision to place weapons under the State’s exclusive authority has already been made, and the circumstances will determine how it is implemented.”
“The issue of Hezbollah’s weapons requires a responsible approach,” Aoun remarked. “This must be dealt with through communication that prioritizes the national interest. Any contentious topic should not be addressed through the media, but rather through calm and responsible discussions with the relevant parties.”
Aoun also expressed his firm belief that the Lebanese people do not want war. He further emphasized that for lasting peace to be achieved, Lebanon’s sovereignty must be defended solely by the Lebanese Armed Forces, which, according to the president, are the only legitimate force authorized to bear arms in the country.
“To make peace a reality, the Lebanese Armed Forces must defend Lebanon’s sovereignty alone,” Aoun asserted. “They are the sole institution authorized to carry weapons.”
On a separate note, Aoun also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing corruption in Lebanon as he pointed to the necessity of judicial reforms to support this effort. He stressed that reforms in the judicial sector are crucial for rebuilding Lebanon’s institutions and restoring stability.
