Marwan Abdallah, head of the Kataeb Party's Foreign Affairs Department, called for Hezbollah to disarm and for the Lebanese State to restore full control in the wake of recent escalations, including today’s attack on the southern suburbs of Beirut.
In an interview with Al-Hadath, Abdallah emphasized that understanding the root causes of the current situation was critical to resolving the ongoing crisis.
“To understand where we have reached, we must focus on the causes, not just the results,” Abdallah explained. “What we’ve witnessed are attempts and ventures carried out by groups operating outside the state’s control, which have led to a devastating war. Afterward, Hezbollah signed a ceasefire agreement, but today, it is failing to abide by the terms that were agreed upon.”
Abdallah identified three key factors contributing to Lebanon's current instability. First, he blamed Hezbollah for bringing Lebanon to its current predicament. Second, he pointed to the absence of a functional State, weakened by Hezbollah's militia and its Iranian backers, which has allowed other groups—likely behind recent rocket fire—to act with impunity. Lastly, Abdallah cited the overall weakness of Lebanon’s State institutions, which continue to struggle in reasserting their authority.
On the issue of Israeli aircraft flying over Beirut, Abdallah voiced strong criticism, saying that "Israel cannot, every time it is cornered internally, take out its frustrations on Lebanon. We are a sovereign country, and we are building our institutions.”
He also questioned the legitimacy of the recent Israeli strikes, suggesting that the rockets used in recent attacks appeared to be rudimentary.
“We saw images of the rocket launchers from a few days ago, and they were primitive,” he noted. “There are other actors at play here, trying to sabotage the situation.”
Abdallah reiterated the urgent need for Hezbollah to relinquish its weapons to the Lebanese State, calling for a swift and decisive process.
“Hezbollah must hand over its weapons to the State, and this must happen swiftly,” he urged. “The ceasefire must be enforced, and Israeli forces must withdraw to the international borders.”
Abdallah made it clear that the real question was not whether Hezbollah would disarm, but how and when it would happen. He stressed that the process must occur peacefully, allowing the Lebanese government to become the sole protector of the country’s territory and people. Abdallah added that Hezbollah’s disarmament should happen quickly to ensure that Lebanon can begin the critical process of rebuilding.
