Abdallah Says Hezbollah Threatens Lebanon's Stability, Strains Economy and Politics

In an interview with BBC, Head of the Kataeb Foreign Affairs Department Marwan Abdallah expressed deep concern over Lebanon’s precarious position amid ongoing regional conflicts.

He stated, “We, the Lebanese people, have been feeling that the region is on the brink for more than a decade now.”

Abdallah emphasized that the presence of non-state actors has drastically affected the rules of war and peace in the country.

He pointed to the chaos surrounding Lebanon, which has intensified over the years.

He remarked, “Every day and every year for us, there’s a wider conflict.”

With reference to the turmoil in Gaza due to the Hamas-Israel war and the ongoing conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, he noted, “It is all happening in our territory and in our neighborhood so every day we have the same feeling.”

Abdallah indicated,“This war is 80% media and propaganda and 20% actual conflict and military actions.”

He lamented how Hezbollah’s statements and actions exacerbate the pressures on the Lebanese people and the economy, stating, “This makes it even harder for us Lebanese to grow our economy and fix our political system.”

Highlighting the political struggles within Lebanon, he voiced frustration at the lack of attention to the Lebanese people's concerns.

He remarked, “Unfortunately, nobody listens to the voice of the Lebanese people,” referencing the challenges faced after the elections where a majority opposing Hezbollah could not progress toward a new government or president.

Abdallah criticized the current caretaker Prime Minister for failing to represent the Lebanese people, saying, “He does not respond to the will of the Lebanese people, but rather to the ruling parties, including Hezbollah and its allies.”

He further emphasized that the majority of Lebanese did not choose to engage in war, stating, “The majority of the Lebanese didn’t choose to go to war and did not choose to have a war that Hezbollah calls a support war for Gaza and Hamas.”

Abdallah clarified that the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel is not about liberating Lebanese land or protecting sovereignty, asserting, “It is just a war to support the front line of Gaza and Hamas.”

“The war is supposed to stop when the deal in Gaza is in place but we don’t know if it’s enough [anymore] for a ceasefire in Lebanon to take place,” he concluded.
