Last week, Israeli aircraft bombed the Abu Al Duhur air base in Syria. The Israelis initially failed to admit responsibility for the attack, but to a number of observers it was very reminiscent of the attacks in April last year against the Hama and T4 air bases. At the time, these were interpreted as an Israeli effort to prevent the Turkish military from using the bases, amid the rising regional rivalry between Israel and Turkey.

At least 370,000 people have been displaced by fighting in Syria since November 27, the U.N. secretary-general's spokesman said Friday, as rebel forces continue to gain ground.
"Since the escalation of hostilities, at least 370,000 men, women and children, boys and girls, have been displaced, including 100,000 who left their homes more than once. Most of the displaced are women and children," Stephane Dujarric said.
