Dagher Affirms No Dialogue Between Hezbollah and Kataeb Party

Kataeb Secretary-General Serge Dagher reiterated that no dialogue between Kataeb Party and Hezbollah was held at Hezbollah’s offices, at the request of the latter, saying that if his party wants to engage in dialogue, it will do so publicly without any sort of secrecy.

“Lebanon is in a state of collapse and paralysis and even without a budget and all what they do care about is a controversial issue. When Hezbollah is ready for serious dialogue, the Kataeb Party will talk to it on the condition that it puts its illegal weapons down, become a Lebanese party, leave the fields and stop covering the corrupt ruling elite,” Dagher said in an interview with MTV.

“We told Hezbollah that its practices, its illegal weapons and individuality in decisions, make the Lebanese want to separate from it. If Hezbollah does not surrender its illegal weapons. We will be facing a separation between the State of Lebanon and the State of Hezbollah,” he stated.

Dagher deemed Lebanese’ ability to adapt as national disaster, saying that it is true that 17 October revolution did not succeed 100 percent but it brought in good MPs and forced everyone who wanted to smuggle to think twice before undertaking such an act.

“We, as the Kataeb Party, will not participate in any legislative session. The Lebanese Constitution is very clear, all they want is to regulate the vacuum. The caretaker government must not hold meetings,” he said.

When asked about the presidential elections, Dagher noted that there was a clear intention to disrupt the elections sessions, saying that no one asked Hezbollah to support presidential candidate MP Michel Mouawad.

“Let Hezbollah announce its candidate and elect him. We, as the Kataeb Party, will not accept and will not elect a candidate affiliated to March 8 camp. Six years ago we refused to elect Michel Aoun as President and today we do not want to extend the Lebanese’ sufferings for six additional years.

"We do not want to drag the country into a civil war. We seek a President who addresses all country’s main issues, namely Hezbollah’s illegal weapons,” he pointed out.

When asked if the Kataeb Party will disrupt the quorum or not in the presidential elections sessions, Dagher said that his party would announce its position at the appropriate time.

“We must know the position of the Army Commander Joseph Aoun concerning the economic file, Hezbollah’s illegal weapons and many other important files and then we decide wether we will support him for presidency or not. We cannot elect Sleiman Frangieh as he is on a political axis that we openly oppose,”the Kataeb Secretary-General affirmed.

When asked about the relationship between the Kataeb Party and the Lebanese Forces, Dagher reiterated that his party mentioned before that it would hold talks with all the deputies, saying that both of them may agree on some topics and disagree on others.

"This also applies on the relationship between the Kataeb Party, the Progressive Socialist Party, the Moderation bloc and a large number of independent deputies," he concluded.
