YASA pointed out that the year 2023 witnessed a significant deterioration in the reality of traffic safety in Lebanon, due to several reasons, the most prominent of which is the economic crisis.
YASA stated in a press release: "Work in mechanical inspection has stopped for the first time in 20 years, road maintenance and infrastructure have declined, and the ability of most people to maintain vehicles has weakened due to the significant collapse of the national currency.
It called on citizens, both drivers and pedestrians, not to turn the joy of the holiday into traffic disasters," noting that "this year has seen enough, urging "all road users to be cautious, drive calmly, and commit to using the seat belt.
YASA also urged citizens not to overindulge in alcohol for drivers of all types of vehicles because the association of holidays, especially New Year's Eve with alcohol for some citizens, has made this occasion a cause of death for the best of youth on the roads.
It also noted the need to appoint a designated driver to ensure a safe return or to use taxis.
It called on internal security forces to suppress alcohol violations, in case the amount of alcohol exceeded half a gram per liter of blood, and to remind citizens that the traffic law allows internal security forces to apply it to everyone without any exception.
It reminded citizens of "the importance of wearing a seat belt in all seats without exception, especially in the front seat next to the driver, and the importance of children up to the age of eight sitting in the safety seat."
It mentioned the necessity of maintaining vehicles, especially the vehicles of people who want to stay up late in mountainous areas where visibility is difficult, and ice often forms in the early dawn hours which coincide with the return of young people from New Year's Eve.
It explained that physical fatigue resulting from frequent movements during the holiday period may lead to an increase in the number of traffic accidents, calling for attention to the dangers of severe fatigue resulting from New Year's Eve which extends for a long period.
It asked the parents of young people between the ages of 16 and 27 to gently draw these young people's attention to the dangers they may face while driving, especially on New Year's Eve, reminding parents of the legal and moral responsibility in case their children under the age of eighteen drive the vehicle.
It called on the media to remind citizens of the dangers of driving on New Year's Eve to avoid accidents that can result from such a night, in case of non-compliance with traffic laws and general safety guidelines.
YASA also reminded that holidays are occasions for joy and meeting loved ones, not for parting and mourning them, noting that the holiday period witnesses distinctive traffic movement on all roads, especially on mountain roads in winter, calling everyone to commit to these guidelines in the last days and hours of the current year.
It also noted the importance of fully complying with the guidelines of the internal security forces, civil defense, and the Lebanese Red Cross.
