Washington is seeking to strike a security agreement with Lebanon rather than a truce, amid concerns that Hezbollah could escalate internally, American sources told Al-Hadath.
The sources said U.S. intelligence has flagged the possibility that Hezbollah may seek to intensify its actions inside Lebanon, prompting Washington to push for a broader security framework instead of a limited ceasefire arrangement.
According to the sources, U.S. officials will tell the commander of the Lebanese Army during his upcoming visit to Washington that the United States will not tolerate any domestic escalation by Hezbollah and that the process of consolidating weapons under state authority must advance as quickly as possible.
They added that the Lebanese Army chief’s meetings in Washington will include talks with officials at the Pentagon, the National Security Council and the State Department.
“The Lebanese Army commander will hear in Washington that the pace of the disarmament process is slow,” the sources said.
In parallel, the sources said Washington is seeking to establish a “direct political negotiating framework” between Lebanon and Israel that would exclude both France and the United Nations.
They also said the U.S. officer who heads the ceasefire monitoring committee, known as the “mechanism,” has left Lebanon, with no clarity over whether his departure is temporary or permanent.
According to the sources, Washington is not enthusiastic about France’s participation in meetings of the mechanism, arguing that if the Lebanese state has completed its work south of the Litani River, there is no longer a need for the committee.
