UNIFIL Voices Alarm as Violence Escalates Beyond Blue Line in Southern Lebanon

UNIFIL expressed deep concern on Thursday regarding the cross-border exchange of fire affecting areas located far from the Blue Line.

UNIFIL spokesperson Andrea Tenenti, emphasized that attacks on civilians constitute violations of international law and amount to war crimes.

"Recently, there has been a worrying escalation in the exchanges of fire, with incidents occurring in areas situated well beyond the Blue Line," Tenenti stated.

"The escalation of conflict has resulted in the tragic loss of numerous lives, including innocent children," he lamented.

UNIFIL spokesperson Andrea Tenenti emphasized the significant damage to homes and public infrastructure, jeopardizing thousands of civilian livelihoods. Stressing that attacks on civilians violate international law and constitute war crimes, Tenenti expressed deep concern over the witnessed devastation, loss of life, and injuries.

Tenenti urged all parties involved to immediately halt hostilities to prevent further escalation. Emphasizing the need to intensify diplomatic efforts to restore stability and safeguard the safety of civilians near the Blue Line,Tenenti demanded diplomatic engagement.

He reiterated that UNIFIL remains fully engaged with the parties to reduce tensions and highlighted that peacekeepers continue to operate on the ground despite facing challenges.
