UNIFIL Finds, Neutralizes Nearly Four Tons of Ammonium Nitrate in South Lebanon
United Nations peacekeepers have neutralized nearly 4,000 kilograms of explosive material discovered in southern Lebanon, underscoring the continuing dangers posed by unexploded ordnance even as security conditions improve and residents gradually return to their communities.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said the cache was uncovered on July 2 during a routine route inspection near the border village of Houla, where peacekeepers found 385 abandoned containers inside a building. The containers held approximately 4,000 kilograms of explosive material, consisting primarily of ammonium nitrate compounds.
Following a detailed assessment, UNIFIL's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists carried out controlled on-site procedures to render the material inert, safely eliminating what the mission described as a significant hazard.
"As UNIFIL expands its operational activities, reducing the risks posed by explosive hazards is essential to ensuring our peacekeepers can carry out their mandate," Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Diodato Abagnara said in a statement.
"Every explosive hazard safely neutralized helps create safer conditions for our operations and contributes to longer-term stability in southern Lebanon," he added.
