Syria Detains Former Spy Chief Involved in Kamal Jumblat Assassination

Syrian security forces arrested Major General Ibrahim Huweija, the former head of Air Force Intelligence, on charges of orchestrating high-profile assassinations during the rule of Hafez al-Assad, state media reported.

The Syrian news agency SANA quoted a security source as saying that Huweija’s arrest followed "careful monitoring and investigation."

The former intelligence chief is accused of playing a key role in numerous assassinations, including the 1977 killing of prominent Lebanese leader Kamal Jumblat.

Huweija, a longtime figure in Syria’s intelligence apparatus, was detained in the coastal city of Jableh, the source said. His role in past political violence has made him a controversial figure, particularly in Lebanon, where his alleged involvement in Jumblatt’s assassination remains a sensitive issue.

Reacting to the news of the arrest, Walid Jumblat, former leader of Lebanon’s Progressive Socialist Party and son of Kamal Jumblat, posted "Allahu Akbar" (God is the Greatest) on his X account.
