FIFA to Decide on World Cup Expansion in June

FIFA announced on Friday it will make a decision in June on whether to expand the size of the 2022 World Cup to 48 teams, saying that this option is feasible provided that certain conditions are met.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said that such a plan would require some of the countries neighboring Qatar to host some of the World Cup games.

"We will move to the next stage, we will explore the possibility of who could potentially be hosting some of the Games in the Gulf regions," he noted.

"And if we come to some conclusions in June we will make a proposal to the Council and to the Congress, who is our ultimate decision making body, who will provide the final decision on this topic,” he added.

So far, Kuwait and Oman seem to be the only two realistic options for co-hosting the tournament given the ongoing rupture of ties between Qatar on one side and Saudi Arabia, UAE and Bahrain on the other.
