Amazon Chief Expects Commercial Robots in Next Decade

Amazon.com Inc Chief Executive Jeff Bezos expected commercial robots, which would have the capacity to carry and hold things as firmly as humans, to emerge in the next 10 years.

The suggested automation development aims at helping workers, whether for elder care in the home or for the picking and packing of goods in retail warehouses.

“I think grasping is going to be a solved problem in the next 10 years. It’s turned out to be an incredibly difficult problem, probably in part because we’re starting to solve it with machine vision, so (that means) machine vision did have to come first,” Bezos said during Amazon’s “re:MARS” conference in Las Vegas.

Although he did not mention Amazon setting out the technology, the company is known for its mechanization initiatives.

“It’s also very good business for Amazon because it’s (a) very high capex undertaking; it’s multiple billions of dollars of capex. Amazon is a large enough company now that we need to do things that if they work can actually move the needle,” Bezos indicated, as Amazon is preparing to launch Project Kuiper where thousands of satellites will embark to space in order to expand broadband internet access.
