Two Large Icebergs Detach From Galcier in Small Time Interval

Two large icerbergs broke away from the Grey Glacier in Chilean Patagonia during a period of just two weeks, experts revealed.

This first-of-a-kind incident serves as another sign indicating the accelerating pace of climate change, they warned.

A giant iceberg with the size of 89,000 square meters (equal the size of six football pitches) and another 60,000 square meter piece detached on February 20 and March 7, respectively.

The 270 square kilometer glacier has, consequently, shrunk by 500 meters, more than half the amount lost over the previous decade.

Scientists say that unusually warm summer temperatures (up to 31 degrees Celsius in Patagonia ) and high rainfall weakened the glacier's walls.

"The receding of the glaciers coincides with the increased temperatures that we've noticed in the region," said Inti Gonzalez, a glaciologist at the Cequa Foundation that studies geology in Patagonia and the Antarctic.
