Salam Says Government Decided to Keep Subsidizing Bread

Caretaker Minister of Economy Amine Salam on Friday met with a delegation of bakeries’ owners with talks featuring high on the latest developments in Lebanon namely on the wheat and bread crisis.

"The state has sought to secure funds for subsidies, open credit lines, and keep subsidizing bread even though we live in a country which is unable to provide subsidies,” Salam stated during a press conference.

“The scarcity and possibility of not securing such funds have left mill dealers concerned,” Salam added, stressing the Ministry’s follow-up with the Central bank to open the credit lines.

The caretaker minister emphasized the fact that no one had let them lift subsidies taking into consideration that such decisions are usually made by the state in collaboration with ministers and not with unions.

Salam stated that the government had decided to keep subsidizing bread as it is the last resort for citizens due to the high rate of poverty.
