Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on Thursday lauded the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) for completing the first phase of its plan to enforce the government’s decision to monopolize arms and extend State authority across the country.
In a statement issue following a cabinet session, Salam commended the army’s leadership, officers, and soldiers for their “tremendous efforts” and honored the memory of LAF personnel who have fallen while carrying out their national duties in pursuit of these objectives.
He stressed the “urgent need” for logistical and material support to strengthen the army’s capacity to implement the second phase of the plan, which covers the area between the Litani and Awali rivers, as well as subsequent stages, as quickly as possible.
Salam also highlighted that ensuring the return of residents to southern areas near the Litani River is a priority following the completion of the first phase. He said the government plans to accelerate reconstruction efforts in the south in the coming weeks, pending parliamentary approval of a World Bank loan earmarked for this purpose.
The prime minister further underscored Lebanon’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to rally Arab and international support to pressure Israel to withdraw from five occupied points, halt continuing attacks, and secure the return of Lebanese captives. He said these steps are essential to consolidate stability and fully extend state authority across Lebanon.
