Top US diplomat Marco Rubio said on Sunday that the United States and Israel expect the Lebanese state to work towards disarming Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah, which fought a war with Israel last year.

"In the case of Lebanon, our goals are aligned in the same. A strong Lebanese state that can take on and disarm Hezbollah," Rubio said in a joint address to reporters with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that his country is committed to the ceasefire and the understandings reached in November, adding that he expects the government of Lebanon to be equally committed.

“Hezbollah must be disarmed,” he said, "Israel would prefer the Lebanese army does that job, but Israel will do what it must."
