Report: Assad Allegedly Targeted in Suspected Poisoning Attempt

An alleged poisoning attempt on ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has surfaced, according to a report by the UK publication The Sun, citing a Russian report.

Assad, who has been under Russian President Vladimir Putin's protection in Moscow since his removal from power on December 8, reportedly fell gravely ill on Sunday.

The claim originates from the online account General SVR, purportedly operated by a former senior Russian intelligence official. According to the account, the 59-year-old Assad requested medical assistance after suddenly becoming violently ill.

“He began to cough violently and choke shortly after calling for help,” the report stated, fueling suspicions of an assassination attempt.

Assad was reportedly treated in his Moscow residence, with his condition stabilizing by Monday. Subsequent medical tests allegedly detected poison in his system.

The claims remain unverified, with no official confirmation or comment from Russian authorities on the incident.
