The world’s smallest baby ever to survive a premature birth came to life at a California hospital in December, the healthcare establishment uncovered.
The baby girl weighed 245 grams when she was born only 23 weeks and three days into her mother’s pregnancy at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns in San Diego.
The newborn was expected to live for barely an hour, as doctors informed her father.
“But that hour turned into two hours which turned into a day, which turned into a week,” the mother said in a video released by the hospital.
The baby girl was discharged after spending five months at the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit, weighing a healthy 2.2 kilograms.
