Mikati Calls for Shielding Lebanon from Regional Conflicts in Meeting with Vatican's Parolin

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Wednesday met with the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, with talks focusing on the latest developments in Lebanon.

Following the meeting held at the Grand Serail, Mikati said that the Lebanese government and the Holy See share the same concerns, pinpointing the priorities that both sides accord utmost importance to.

Mikati noted that on top of the shared priorities is the election of a president as soon as possible, both sides being aware that the lingering void has negative repercussions at all levels.

The caretaker PM also emphasized the need for rebuilding the State and its institutions, adhering to the Constitution for the common Lebanese interest, boosting coexistence, ensuring internal stability, and finding a solution to the escalating economic and social crises that are battering the country.

“Using all available means to prevent Lebanon from becoming a battlefield for armed conflicts originating from the south, and implementing relevant international resolutions to curb Israel's expansionist ambitions, and thereby not linking Lebanon's stability and interests to highly complex conflicts and endless wars,” Mikati added.

He also outlined the need to maintain the best relations with friendly countries supporting Lebanon in these difficult circumstances, notably the Vatican which has provided and continues to provide support and assistance to Lebanon.
