Roadblocks Reported All over Lebanon as Transport Workers Strike

Land transportation workers, including bus drivers and truckers, launched a strike action this morning at 6 a.m. to protest the government’s inaction on promised aid to the sector, amid a climbing cost of living crisis for drivers.

Early this morning traffic authorities reported a number of trucks and buses had gathered on the Dora highway towards Karantina. Shortly afterward, the NNA reported that traffic was cut off on the sea road in Dora and at the roundabout, as well as downtown from the Annahar building to al-Amin mosque.

Roadblocks were also reported at the Aley roundabout, Choueifat, Chatoura, and the southern entrance to Tripoli. NNA reports the Kfarshima Bridge is cut off in both directions.

In Saida, the strike was limited to a gathering of vans near the city’s Nejmeh Square, while taxis continued to operate in the city.

Some of the striking drivers in Beirut will assemble at Riad el-Solh at 10 a.m. after which time they will begin to disperse.
