President Michel Aoun and Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati Thursday locked horns over responsibility for obstructing the formation of a new government, in a negative development that shattered hopes for breaking the Cabinet formation stalemate this week.

While the chief of the powerful General Security retired Maj. Gen. Abbas Ibrahim was thought to be making progress in his shuttle visits between the two leaders to break the Cabinet deadlock, Aoun and Mikati unexpectedly engaged in a war of words with each implicitly accusing the other of responsibility for blocking the formation of a new government desperately needed to deliver reforms and avert the country’s total economic collapse.
