The head of the powerful General Security is mediating between President Michel Aoun and Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati, an official source said Monday, in what appeared to be a last-ditch attempt to break the Cabinet formation stalemate and avert the possibility of Mikati stepping down.
The mediation effort by retired Maj. Gen. Abbas Ibrahim comes as hopes for a Cabinet breakthrough are fading with Aoun and Mikati refusing to soften their conflicting positions on the distribution of some ministerial portfolios and proposed candidates for key ministries.
