Akkar Explosion Casts Gloom on Cabinet Formation Efforts

A fuel tank explosion that killed at least 28 people in north Lebanon early Sunday has overshadowed Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati’s attempts to form a new government, casting gloom on "speedy progress" made in the Cabinet formation process amid calls for the president to step down over the blast.

Also Sunday, Mikati, former Prime Minister Saad Hariri and two other former premiers said the fuel tank blast in Al-Tleil village in the northern Akkar region in which 79 others were also injured should spur President Michel Aoun and all political parties to help overcome obstacles hindering the formation of a new government desperately needed to enact reforms and rescue the crises-hit country from all-out economic collapse.
