Hezbollah is mediating with the Free Patriotic Movement in a bid to accelerate the formation of a new government desperately needed to cope with a series of crises, including an unprecedented financial downturn, a senior Hezbollah source said Thursday.

This comes as progress was reported Thursday in the third meeting between President Michel Aoun and Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati as part of their ongoing discussions to agree on the formation of a new government.

Unlike the two previous meetings, Mikati, who was designated last Monday with a parliamentary majority as Lebanon’s new prime minister, did not speak to reporters after his talks with Aoun at Baabda Palace beyond saying that the next meeting with the president will be held Monday.
