Lebanon to Hold Consultations on New PM Next Week; Mikati Seen Favorite

President Michel Aoun is set to hold binding consultations with parliamentary blocs next week to appoint a new prime minister, days after Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri stepped down in a dramatic move that has thrown the crises-hit country into further economic turmoil and political instability.

A statement released by the presidency’s directorate general said that under Article 53 in the Constitution, the president would hold binding parliamentary consultations to designate a prime minister to form a new government on Monday, July 26 at Baabda Palace. The statement set the time for each bloc, as well as for independent MPs to be received by Aoun at Baabda Palace.

Under the Constitution, Aoun is required to designate a candidate for prime minister with the most support from parliamentary blocs.
