UN Denies Responsibility for Entry of Explosives to Beirut

The United Nations Tuesday rejected claims made by arrested Customs chief Badri Daher that it inspected and cleared the cargo of the ship that delivered nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate to Beirut Port in 2013.

Local newspaper Al-Akhbar reported Tuesday that Daher, during an interrogation led by the judicial investigator into the Aug. 4 Beirut Port explosion, said that the UN inspected the Rhosus when it entered Lebanese territorial waters in 2013 and found no restricted items onboard.

The Maritime Task Force of the UN Peacekeeping Force in south Lebanon's mandate is to "verify that there are no unauthorized arms or related materials” on board vessels entering Lebanese waters.
