General Security chief Abbas Ibrahim said that no information have been so far received about refugees being harassed upon their return to Syria, noting that a UN official who recently visited Lebanon also confirmed this.
"I asked the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, about whether he had received any information about refugees being intimidated by Syrian authorities. He gave a negative response," he told NBN channel.
Ibrahim stressed that the refugees' return is being totally voluntary, assuring that none is forcibly repatriated.
He pointed out that the General Security estimates the number of refugees in Lebanon at 1.4 million, with only 170,000 having returned so far.
However, Ibrahim expected more Syrians to return back to their homeland over the few next months, once the weather conditions become favorable.
