They may have recalled what the US envoy Tom Barrack said last July, speaking of the Lebanese: “I honestly think that they are going to say ‘the world will pass us by’. Why? You have Israel on one side, you have Iran on the other, and now you have Syria manifesting itself so quickly that if Lebanon doesn’t move, it’s going to be Bilad Al Sham again.”

In a televised interview, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam sought to outline a vision for bringing the state back into the sovereignty equation and breaking the link between the logic of the state and the logic of force. He insisted that decisions of war and peace must be made by the government alone, and that the era of foreign guardianship is over. Lebanon, he said, cannot stabilize unless a state monopoly on armament is restored, with security and military decisions reclaimed by its institutions.

Asharq al-Awsat newspaper has indicated that warnings issued by Arab embassies in Beirut to their citizens have put the local security situation under scrutiny by these countries.
This fact has led to confusion, several days after the outbreak of armed clashes in the Palestinian camp of Ain el-Helweh.
The newspaper specified that the latest warnings were issued by United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Sultanate of Oman.
For his part, House Speaker Nabih Berri stated that the security situation does not justify the publication of such statements.
