Lebanon’s Al-Qaa Bolsters Security as Syrian Army Vacates Border Positions

The border town of Al-Qaa in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley is closely monitoring the unfolding events in neighboring Syria. Reports from within the town indicate heightened readiness by local municipal police, alongside reinforced Lebanese Army deployment along the border.

On Saturday evening, information emerged about the Syrian Army vacating positions near the Syrian Customs area in Jousiyeh, prompting the Lebanese Army to bolster its presence at the border. This move follows precautionary measures taken by the Lebanese military in recent days to enhance its deployment in border regions.

“We have received reports of further Syrian Army withdrawals from the area near the Syrian Customs in Jousieh. We are now gathering in the town alongside the army, closely observing the situation," Bashir Matar, Mayor of Al-Qaa, told Annahar.

Matar sought to reassure residents, stating, “I don’t believe Syrian opposition fighters will cross into Lebanese territories. However, it’s natural for residents to feel concerned given the ongoing events. We urge them to remain in the town and trust in the Lebanese Army’s strength to protect them.”
