Maronite Patriarch Bechara Al-Rahi called on the Lebanese people to embrace a culture of active positive neutrality as a solution to the nation’s enduring crises, emphasizing the importance of Lebanon returning to its foundational principles, which ensure national sovereignty, unity, and independence from external conflicts.
"Lebanon’s salvation lies in returning to the culture of active positive neutrality," he stated in his yearly Christmas address. "This neutrality ensures one unified army, one national policy, and independence from wars, disputes, and alliances. It enables Lebanon to safeguard its sovereignty, defend its territory against aggression, and avoid interfering in the affairs of other nations. Such a stance positions Lebanon as a vital hub for cultural and religious dialogue, as well as an advocate for peace and understanding in the region."
Patriarch Al-Rahi highlighted the far-reaching benefits of neutrality, not only politically but also economically.
"A long-term commitment to neutrality creates a legacy of stability and credibility that enhances trust among investors and trading partners," he explained. "Neutrality allows small nations like Lebanon to avoid the pressures of political alignment, transforming into safe havens for capital."
"Neutrality is not merely a political stance but an economic strategy. It fosters stability, diplomatic flexibility, and financial innovation, enabling neutral nations to achieve sustainable economic growth," he stressed.
The patriarch also underscored the need for a new political culture in Lebanon, rooted in competence, integrity, loyalty, love, rights, law, and virtue.
"Such a culture can only be achieved through governance led by a politically and technically competent authority that understands the importance of salvific choices," he stated, urging Lebanese leaders to prioritize the nation’s welfare over external influences.
Patriarch Al-Rahi expressed cautious optimism about the upcoming presidential election session scheduled for January 9.
"We look forward with confidence and hope to this date, which represents an opportunity to restore constitutional order and elect a president who can lead Lebanon out of its current challenges," he said.
He lamented the prolonged, "embarrassing" vacuum, describing it a "blatant violation of the Constitution" caused by parliamentarians awaiting external directives.
In closing, Patriarch Al-Rahi linked the presidential election to the broader context of the Holy Year 2025, proclaimed by Pope Francis. He expressed his hope that the coming year would bring blessings and prosperity to Lebanon, grounded in the grace of the birth of Christ.
