Lebanon Court Reduces Bail for Ex-Central Bank Chief to $14 Million

A Lebanese court on Thursday ordered the release of former central bank governor Riad Salameh after reducing his bail from $20 million to $14 million, according to local reports.

Judge Kamal Nassar, head of Beirut’s Indictment Chamber, issued the ruling, which paves the way for Salameh’s release from prison, where he has been held for a year now.

Local broadcaster Al-Jadeed reported that Salameh is expected to pay the reduced bail and walk free.

Last month, the Beirut court ordered the release of Salameh on bail set at $20 million and 5 billion Lebanese pounds, while imposing a one-year travel ban as part of ongoing legal proceedings against him.

Salameh, who led Lebanon's Central Bank for three decades, has faced mounting legal troubles at home and abroad over allegations of embezzlement, illicit enrichment, tax evasion, and money laundering.
