A new batch of heavy weapons is expected to be handed over from the Ain al-Helweh Palestinian refugee camp to the Lebanese Army on Tuesday, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The sources told Kataeb.org that the handover will involve heavy weapons currently held inside the camp, located near the southern city of Sidon and long considered one of the country’s most volatile security zones.
The expected transfer follows a previous handover carried out earlier this year, when several Palestinian factions agreed to surrender an initial batch of heavy arms to the Lebanese Army under security arrangements coordinated with Lebanese authorities.
Ain al-Helweh, the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, has for decades remained outside the direct control of the Lebanese state, with various Palestinian factions maintaining armed presences inside the camp. Sporadic clashes and tensions have repeatedly raised fears of spillover into surrounding areas.
